The Internet2 Sponsored Education Group Participant (SEGP) program, which began in early 2001, is intended to allow expanded access to Abilene for state and regional education networks through sponsorship by Internet2 SEGP connectors.
The TexasSEGP program comprises five Internet2 SEGP connectors. State and regional networks may include nonprofit and for-profit K-12, community colleges, universities, museums, libraries, art galleries, or hospitals that require routine collaboration on instructional, clinical or research projects, services, and content with Internet2 members or with other sponsored participants.
Internet2 is a consortium of over 200 U.S. universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies.
Currently the consortium operates Abilene, a high-speed backbone network, which spans the nation and peers with several dozen U.S. and non-U.S. research and education networks in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Abilene is a proving ground for high-bandwidth technologies. Currently operating at 2.5 gigabits-per-second, the Abilene backbone is being upgraded to 10 gigabits per second.
